New year, new insulation requirements

In accordance with the Paris Treaty of 2016, New Zealand is committed to being carbon-neutral by 2050.

The Construction Industry plays an important part in achieving this goal, and consequently, the NZ Government has tasked MBIE (Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment) with finding ways to align the industry with this goal.

New insulation requirements in H1 Energy Efficiency of the Building Code have been announced in order to make new homes warmer, drier and healthier. The new requirements were announced by MBIE after consultation- which resulted in the majority supporting more energy-efficient homes for NZ.

The changes will be seen as an increase in R-values across all of New Zealand in new 6 new climate zones to reflect the different climates experienced across the country. The biggest change to R-value is the increase of roof insulation to R6.6. The new r-values can be seen on the MBIE website.

The changes have been introduced as a step of the way to meeting New Zealand's commitment to the Paris Treaty of 2016 (becoming carbon-neutral by 2050) New Zealand will be seeing more frequent changes to H1 Energy-Efficiency as we make our way to being carbon-neutral.

MBIE states that “We have engaged with industry stakeholders to ensure that the changes we are making are readily achievable across the country. There will be a 1 year transition period for the majority of the changes and a 2 step approach for the window insulation requirements which will allow the sector to prepare for the changes before they become mandatory for new builds.”

The changes will be mandatory November 2022.

It won't be long before these changes will be mandatory - so if you're considering to build, it is important to start discussions around building with higher insulation and higher performance building systems.

We're excited for what's to come- watch this space for updates from Formance on the new code changes.
